“What sick ridiculous puppets we are,

and what gross little stage we dance on

What fun we have dancing and fucking;

Not a care in the world

Not knowing that we are nothing

We are not what was intended.”

Had heard a lot about this movie from one of my cinephile buddy, and so after a day of downloading it from ‘you know where’, I got down to watch it. And I must admit, I wasn’t pleased much! Yes! I guess i’ll go with the reasons later on. Lets get down to business first!

So, Detective Somerset is in his last days before his retirement, and that’s when he gets a new case to hold on to. And a new ‘kid’ who’s there to replace him- Mills. Before they know, the case gets further complicated with another murder with his murder being tagged as Greed. Soon, they realise that the serial killer is playing on with them on The Seven Sins- Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Pride, Lust, Envy and Wrath. Still, they aren’t able to get hold of something strong.

In this process of searching clues, multiple references have been made to literature and art, especially Dante’s Inferno and Chaucer’s Canterbury tales et cetera. Finally, they get a tip from FBI and they head on to a John Doe’s place for questioning. And that’s when they know something for sure. In total, five deaths occur very cruelly and gruesomely, but mind you, they aren’t so cruel as said by many (thanks to The Silence Of Lambs).

Most exciting part of the movie is the third act, when the serial killer himself turns in, and then the suspense begins. The third act is laden with the actual meaning of the film and it supports what has been built up throughout the last 90 minutes. But then, the climax??? It was very much expected (atleast I’d expected it)!

In a snap, whole movie turned outta be nothing than just a rat chase by a father and his son!

Now, why I didn’t get impressed? I already mentioned it. The Silence Of The Lambs, Hannibal etc. This movie has been based on many of such psychopath serial murder flicks, and when you have already seen the masterpiece i.e. The Silence Of The Lambs, you’re not gonna love it!

That apart, the movie has been wonderfully crafted with fantastic imagery and sets, again thanks to Darius Khondji’s awesome camera work and David Fincher’s direction. The streets have been shown with rains and smoke, and it depicts the hell they are living in. Short but brilliant performance by Gwyneth Paltrow, apart from the geniuses Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt and Kevin Spacey.

All in all, this is a great movie from cinematic point of view. One gets to learn a lot about the lighting and camera work and the frames! From story point of view, you’ll find it awesome only if you haven’t watched the ones I mentioned above.

Here are some of my favorite shots from the movie!

“Ernest Hemingway once wrote, ‘The world is a fine place and worth fighting for.’ I agree with the second part.”
