“You need more than guts to be a good gangster. You need ideas.”

Ask any filmmaker who has had worshipped the genre of gangster films, and he’d say The Almighty of this genre rests in just one film. And that is City Of God! Be it the legendary Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino or Anurag Kashyap. Each one of them have revered it as a masterpiece. And you know that from its first very scene.

The moment the chicken chase begins, you know your eyes are gonna chase every character and they are gonna be chased by others. I’m still in awe of the fact how the chicken chase shot was executed!

Anyways, coming to the story, it follows the life of Li’l Dice later known as Li’l Z’, narrated by another character Rocket. And mind you, the story of Li’l Z‘ blows your head apart. His transformation from a sadistic kid to a crime lord in the slums of Rio De Janeiro is the best portion of the movie.

Throughout the movie, one gets to see revenge as the main theme, but the film also features an yearning desire to leave from all violence. But, every time someone tries to leave the world of  crime, it hits back upon them, as evidenced from the case of Tender Trio and Benny.

In the meantime, Li’l Z’ gets another enemy in the form of Ned, and that brings up the crux of the situation. On the other hand, our narrator, Rocket gets his dream fulfilled and the story gets captured through his lenses.

What happens in the end, is an icing on the cake! And you know things that start at a place like this don’t end so well!

Again, I must say I can’t fathom some of the shots taken in the film. The sets created remind you of Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas, these being so magnificent and realistic. And the acting by these amateur artists totally captivated my attention throughout the film, especially the kids!

All in all, the movie just didn’t deserve only Academy Award nominations, but also the awards!

But as they say: “Honesty doesn’t pay, sucker.” 😉
